FARM ADVISOR

Veggies to Table is hiring a knowledgeable and Non-Profit Farm Advisor to join our team on a full or part time basis. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with a dedicated group of farmers, an administrative team, and a board working to help end hunger in our community

As a non-profit organization we are looking for an individual committed to advancing our sustainable, organic, no-spray, no-till farming practices of diversified vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs on 1.5 acres while supporting our mission through expert guidance. 

This role is for someone who can cover the responsibilities typically overseen by a Farm Manager in a more flexible manner- these responsibilities range from hands-on farming to big-picture strategic planning, from managing the farm crew to organizing educational workshops. The ideal candidate has a rich background and expertise in both organic farming and organizational growth. This person will play a key role in establishing well-defined objectives, guiding the team to achieve both immediate and future goals, and will serve as the director of our grow-to-donate program. If you are seeking a more hands-on, full-time, and immersive role, our Farm Manager position might be a better fit.

Qualifications:

  • 8-10+ seasons of hands-on experience in organic farming.

  • 5+ seasons experience managing and mentoring a crew, interns, and volunteers

  • Strong understanding of crop planning, soil health, and organic pest control

  • Experience mentoring and training farm crews, interns, and volunteers of all ages.

  • Experience working in a nonprofit setting

  • Ability to see both the big picture and smaller details to guide farm activities effectively.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication with a variety of people and backgrounds.

  • Detail-oriented approach with a focus on order and cleanliness.

  • A passion for and commitment to growing quality produce for those who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

Responsibilities:

  1. Farm Management:

    1. Create a plan and coordinate with our team to build soil health using soil tests, cover crops and organic amendments

    2. Help craft a multi-year crop plan in collaboration with qualified team members

    3. Provide expert advice on organic, no-till, and no-spray farming methods

    4. Assist in the development and implementation of best practices for diversified vegetable, fruit, flower, and herb cultivation

    5. Provide insights and recommendations for continuous improvement of farming systems and practices and record keeping

    6. Report materials, tools, and amendments that need to be ordered

    7. Create daily, weekly, and seasonal plans to accomplish short-term and long-term goals

    8. Offer guidance to the farm team, volunteers, and interns on planting tactics, efficient harvesting methods, soil health, fertility, and organic pest control

    9. Conduct training sessions on sustainable farming techniques, succession planting, cover crops, and crop plan development

    10. Work in conjunction with 2-3 farmhands, our Executive Director, and many Wwoofers and local volunteers

2. Program Management: 

    1. Collaborate with the Executive Director and our administrative team to support the grow-to-donate program 

    2. Offer insight on how we can increase the amount of food we’re growing for our community and how to make it more accessible

    3. Write new, and maintain existing, SOPs

    4. Help develop educational programming

    5. Help develop an on-site intern program
